See that thing that Katie is hauling around? That's our trap bar.
A trap bar (or hex bar, for its hexagonal shape) is a piece of equipment that gives a different stimulus for familiar movements. It's beneficial for athletes to train different ways, in order to help increase general fitness and also as an option due to injury/strain.
The trap bar can be used like a typical barbell for many movements, including:
squats
deadlifts
Romanian deadlifts
bent over rows
inverted rows
elevated squats
lunges
shrugs
A trap bar provides more stability than a barbell, and it can be gripped in different ways. There is some comfort in its straightforward grip, and is known to put less stress on elbows and wrists because of this. This neutral grip also tends to put less stress on the lower back.
The even distribution of the weight has an interesting effect with a Farmer's Carry. Because the bar can hold heavy weights, you can generally carry more with the trap bar than with a traditional Farmer's Carry, which has something in each hand. Yes, your body isn't using the tiny muscles to stabilize the carry, but that's part of the point: you can focus on heavy grip strength, abdominal stability, and balance.
Try out that trap bar--ask one of the coaches to recommend something and see if it helps!
